"Editorial: Examining Social Software in Teacher Education"

This article assisted me in finally learning some of the definitions of sites I actually use and some of the terminology that my children use. I am better able to understand the function and use of social-networking site. I was apprehensive at first to join Facebook, when a friend first invited me a few months back, because of the stories of how teachers and other professionals have gotten themselves in trouble with what was on the site. I now realize that it is lack of knowledge and even ignorance to a point that leads people to post inappropriate pictures and posts.

  1. Information is valuable! I was grateful after reading this article for the opportunity to learn. I see that if I had done a little more research for myself, I wouldn't be so far behind right now.

  2. I read the same article and had the same feelings. I orginally had myspace back when I first started teaching high school. Though I did not "friend" any of my students, they somehow were able to get inappropriate messages on my board. I finally got rid of it and went on Facebook. It seems easier to use and easier to keeping it private and away from kids. Its nice to get to reconnect with friends and stay in touch when you don't have the same time to share!

  3. The information about how all these different sites came about is really interesting. I think most of us take it for granted, but can you imagine the work that goes into creating a site like "Facebook" for example? Not sure about you, but this experience has really opened my eyes to the different ways of communicating and I think it is a great thing to consider for our different educational settings.

  4. I also like that the article really spelled out things. Some of the technology is so widely known that I might feel silly asking basic questions. I still ask, but it is great to have it all in my binder to refer to! One of the points I took away from this article was that we have to balance our use and acquire as much information as possible, which we know is ever-growing!

  5. I also was very reluctant to join any type of social circles because of the Nightmare stories that I had previously heard but after this weeks assignment, I can see the tremendous benefits of technology if you use it correctly. This has been a learning week for me also. The main thing to do is to educate people about what is appropiate!
    Mahalo for your insight!
